Startup India Recognition in Punjab: DPIIT Benefits and State Startup Support
How DPIIT Startup India recognition works for startups in Punjab: eligibility, benefits, the separate tax holiday, and state startup support.
Startup India recognition from DPIIT is a national scheme, so a startup in Punjab applies the same way as anywhere else. What changes locally is the support around it: the state's own startup policy, the incubators that can help, and how recognition is used to access them. This guide covers both.
Who Can Be Recognised
- A Private Limited Company, an LLP, or a registered partnership firm. Sole proprietorships and unregistered partnerships can't apply.
- No more than 10 years from incorporation or registration.
- Turnover that hasn't exceeded ₹100 crore in any financial year.
- Working on innovation, or on improving products, processes or services, or a scalable business model with potential to create jobs or wealth.
- Not formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business.
The application is made online on the Startup India portal, with no government fee. Recognition lasts until the entity is 10 years old, or ends earlier if turnover crosses ₹100 crore.
What Recognition Gives You
- IP rebates: an 80% rebate on patent filing fees, a 50% rebate on trademark fees, and expedited patent examination.
- Public procurement: relaxation of prior-experience and prior-turnover criteria in central government tenders, and exemption from earnest money deposits.
- Funding schemes: eligibility for the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme, the Fund of Funds for Startups, and the Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups.
- Self-certification: compliance under certain labour and environmental laws can be self-certified in the early years.
- Convertible notes: recognised startups can raise money through convertible notes.
The Tax Holiday Is Separate
Recognition doesn't grant the income-tax holiday by itself. A recognised company or LLP incorporated between 1 April 2016 and 31 March 2030 can apply separately to the Inter-Ministerial Board for a certificate. With it, the startup can claim a 100% deduction on profits for any 3 consecutive years out of its first 10, and its employees can defer tax on ESOPs. From 1 April 2026 these benefits carry over to the Income-tax Act, 2025 under new section numbers.
Angel tax was abolished for all companies from FY 2024-25, so recognition is no longer needed to avoid it.
State Startup Support in Punjab
Startups in Punjab are concentrated around Mohali and Ludhiana. Support includes:
- Startup Punjab: the state's startup programme.
- Incubation at institutions such as IIT Ropar.
- Proximity to Chandigarh's tricity ecosystem.
State startup policies often use DPIIT recognition as a starting point, and may ask for separate registration on the state's own startup portal. Details and eligibility change over time, so check the current schemes before applying.
