Starting a Business in Telangana: Choosing a Structure and Local Registrations
What founders starting in Telangana should know beyond incorporation: ROC Hyderabad, state registrations, TG-iPASS, and the local startup ecosystem.
Choosing a structure and incorporating works the same way across India. But starting a business in Telangana also means dealing with state registrations and local authorities, and there's a strong startup ecosystem worth knowing about. This guide covers the local side.
Incorporation and ROC Hyderabad
Companies and LLPs with a registered office in Telangana are registered with the Registrar of Companies, Hyderabad, which covers the whole state. The registered office can be a home, a co-working space, or an office, with the right address proof.
State Registrations
- Professional Tax: businesses and employers register with the Telangana Commercial Taxes Department.
- Shops and Establishments: offices and shops register under the Telangana Shops and Establishments Act with the Labour Department.
- Trade licence: from GHMC in Hyderabad, or the local municipality elsewhere.
- GST: registration once turnover crosses the threshold, or immediately in compulsory cases. For goods, Telangana applies the ₹20 lakh threshold.
Industrial and Manufacturing Units
Manufacturing and industrial units need further approvals — building permissions, fire safety, pollution control consents, factory licences, and power connections. Telangana's single-window system, TG-iPASS (previously TS-iPASS), brings many of these together with defined timelines. Industrial land is often allotted through the state's industrial infrastructure corporation, TGIIC (previously TSIIC).
The Startup Ecosystem
Hyderabad has an active startup ecosystem supported by the state, including T-Hub, one of India's largest startup incubators, WE Hub for women entrepreneurs, and T-Works for hardware prototyping. Startups can also apply for DPIIT recognition nationally, and explore state policies for startups and innovation.
Choosing a Structure
The choice of structure doesn't depend on the state, but local factors can matter: state incentives may be tied to the entity that applies for them, and land allotments may restrict transfers, so it's best to set up the long-term entity before applying for either.
A Checklist for Telangana Founders
