Input Tax Credit for Telangana Businesses: Supplier Risks and Inter-state Purchases
Credit issues Telangana businesses meet most: small local suppliers who file late, IGST on inter-state purchases, cancelled registrations, and fake invoices.
Input tax credit rules are the same everywhere, but the risks depend on who your suppliers are and where they're from. For Telangana businesses, a few issues come up repeatedly. This guide covers them.
Small Local Suppliers
Many Telangana businesses buy from small local suppliers — micro enterprises, traders, and service providers — some of whom file GST returns late, file quarterly, or make errors. Their invoices may not appear in GSTR-2B on time. Monthly reconciliation and supplier follow-up protect the credit, and the time limit — 30 November after the year end — gives some room to wait for late filers.
Inter-state Purchases
Purchases from suppliers in other states — such as raw materials from Maharashtra or Gujarat, or electronics from Karnataka or Tamil Nadu — carry IGST. IGST credit is used first to pay IGST, then CGST and SGST under the utilisation rules. Businesses with large IGST credit and mostly intra-state sales need to track utilisation carefully.
Cancelled Registrations
If a supplier's registration is cancelled — sometimes with retrospective effect — credit on their invoices can be questioned. Checking suppliers' GSTIN status periodically, not just when onboarding, helps catch this early.
Fake Invoices
Tax authorities across India, including in Telangana, have focused on networks issuing invoices without supplying goods or services, allowing buyers to claim credit they aren't entitled to. Buyers who claim such credit can face recovery and penalties, even if they say they didn't know. Protect your business by:
- Verifying new suppliers' registration, address, and filing record.
- Paying through banking channels and keeping proof of delivery.
- Being cautious of suppliers offering unusually low prices with GST invoices.
Blocked Credits Common in Hyderabad Businesses
Many Hyderabad offices provide meals, transport, and wellness benefits to staff. Credit on food, cab services, and similar items is generally blocked, except where a law requires the employer to provide them. These are frequent errors in IT and services businesses.
A Checklist
- Reconcile GSTR-2B monthly and follow up local suppliers.
- Track IGST credit utilisation.
- Check supplier GSTIN status periodically.
- Verify suppliers and keep proof of delivery.
- Review staff benefit credits for blocked items.
