Any business that wants to import or export goods from India needs an Import Export Code (IEC). It's quick to get, lasts for life — and can be deactivated if you forget one annual step. This guide explains it.

What It Is

A 10-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), linked to the business's PAN. Customs, banks, and the DGFT use it to identify the business in import and export transactions.

Who Needs It

  • Importers of goods, including raw materials and machinery.
  • Exporters of goods.
  • Service exporters who want to claim benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy.

Limited exemptions apply — for example, imports or exports for personal use, and certain government departments.

How to Apply

  1. Register on the DGFT portal.
  2. Fill in the application with PAN, business details, address, bank account, and details of the proprietor, partners or directors.
  3. Upload the required documents.
  4. Pay the government fee online.
  5. Sign with a DSC or Aadhaar e-sign.

The IEC is usually issued quickly once the application is complete.

The Annual Update

IEC holders must update or confirm their IEC details online every year, between April and June, even if nothing has changed. If they don't, the IEC is deactivated. A deactivated IEC can be reactivated by completing the update, but shipments can be held up in the meantime.

Changes

Update the IEC whenever the business's address, bank account, ownership or other details change.

One PAN, One IEC

The IEC is linked to PAN, so a business has one IEC. Branches are added to it rather than getting their own codes.

Getting Help

Think Filing applies for IECs and handles the annual update so the code never lapses.
