GSTR-2B Reconciliation: How to Protect Your Input Tax Credit

How to reconcile your purchase records with GSTR-2B every month, what to do about mismatches, and how to manage suppliers who file late or not at all.

GSTR-2B is the statement that increasingly decides how much input tax credit you can claim. If a supplier's invoice isn't in it, claiming the credit is risky. Monthly GSTR-2B reconciliation is the single most useful GST habit a business can build. This guide explains how.

What GSTR-2B Is

An auto-generated, static statement for each month, showing credit available from invoices your suppliers reported in their GSTR-1 or IFF, and from imports. It's generated on a fixed date each month, and doesn't change afterwards.

The Monthly Reconciliation

  1. Download GSTR-2B after it's generated.
  2. Export your purchase register for the same month.
  3. Match invoice by invoice, using GSTIN, invoice number, date, and tax amount.
  4. Classify the results: matched, in books but not in 2B, in 2B but not in books, and value mismatches.

Dealing With Each Category

Matched

Claim the credit, if it's otherwise eligible.

In the books but not in GSTR-2B

The supplier hasn't reported it yet, or reported it with an error. Hold the credit and follow up the supplier. Once it appears in a later GSTR-2B, claim it — within the time limit.

In GSTR-2B but not in the books

Either an invoice you haven't recorded, or a supplier reporting a sale that isn't yours. Investigate before claiming.

Value mismatches

Usually typing errors. Ask the supplier to correct their return, or correct your records if the error is yours.

Managing Suppliers

  • Check a new supplier's GSTIN status and filing history before buying.
  • Share monthly lists of missing invoices with suppliers.
  • Link payment release to invoices appearing in GSTR-2B, where commercially possible.
  • Stop buying from suppliers who repeatedly don't file.

Tools

Many accounting systems and GST software tools automate matching, which helps with high volumes. The judgement on what to claim still needs review.
